Nevertheless

見た事も感じた事も読んだ事も想像した事さえない世界。光の粒子が眼に飛び込んでくる。光は粒子だ。本当に驚いた。

しかし物事はそんなに単純ではない。なぜなら、持ち帰ったと思った物たちには、別のなにかが刻印されていたからだ。その物たちは、鏡となり、彼の心の影を映し出す。すなわち「物の哀れ（もののあはれ）」を。

まず１枚目にある車の窓から見たガソリンスタンドを撮り、旅を始めた。1991年7月、ジョージア州アトランタからテネシー州メンフィスまで、ところどころ立ち寄りながら、８日をかけて細い道を運転した。ジャクソンやバーミンガムやモンゴメリーといった大きな街に着くと、パーキングメーターを使って駐車し、何ブロックか歩き回った。本を作ろうという意図はなく、ただ写真を撮ろうと思っていた。
